my new method

To confirm the night I visit the mikveh I now need only look out the window. If it is raining then I probably have a mikveh night. Ok, this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I just find it highly amusing. I end up taking 3 preperation showers/baths: A bath at home, a shower on my walk to the mikveh, and another shower there. The good news is that it stops raining long enough for me...

My Father, My Rabbi

I have a confession to make: I show my questionable bedikot to my father. As I alluded to in my comment to this post, my father is my Local Orthodox Rabbi. Throughout my life I have asked him questions that run the full gamut of Halakha. Why should this change once I got married and had a few more questions? To be sure, it wasn’t so simple. I remember the first time I had a...

Ugh. My stupid period had to come at nighttime this time around, for possibly the first time since I got married. Calculating vestot is going to be a blast... Wait, could this be possible? I have a 48-hour period blocked off in February for two successive vestot? Over a weekend, no less? Well, maybe not really, because I don't really have to keep 24 hours for both of them, but this time of year a...

The Thing

If you've ever had warts, you know how they come and go without warning, usually in groups. A while back, I had a crop of warts on my hands. I visited a dermatologist, who sprayed them with liquid nitrogen. Blisters formed, some clear, some black. A few of the black ones burst at various points, leaving my hands covered with blood. Needless to say, the blisters elicited more comments than the warts. "Are you okay?"...

This raises an interesting question: (comment copied from here) Kelloggs wrote: BTW, color isn't the only area in the laws of TH that one might think is predetermined and yet sometimes rabbis find ways to be lenient anyway. I once forgot on day 7 (DAY 7!!!!) to do my bedikah until 5 minutes after shkiah (you can imagine the feeling - after doing mikvah prep I suddenly realize OH CRAP!), did the bedikah just in...

The Best-Laid Plans...

We’d stopped being shomer negiah three months into our courtship, with firm agreements as to “this far and no further.” Going to the mikva seemed out of the question for us. It would put me in the awkward position of living out an urban legend, the frum single girl at the mikva.

I Can't

Posted by Shifra at 12:02 AM on January 30, 2006 in Infertility.

Growing up I was always the one with the positive attitude. I used to go around the house saying “If you think you can you can, if you think you can’t you can’t.” Well I now have 4 failed inseminations and a surgery under my belt and my head wants to officially start saying “I can’t.” I told myself this wouldn’t be easy. I told myself that Hashem chose me for this trial because I’m...
